August 14, Fineko/abc.az. The S&P 500 index scaled a new intraday record high on Thursday, powered by strong gains in semiconductor and mega-cap technology stocks. Investor sentiment was further bolstered by a retreat in crude oil prices and a softer-than-expected July producer price inflation (PPI) report.
Sandisk (SNDK) and Micron (MU) led the rally on the benchmark index, surging 15% and 5.6% respectively, while the broader semiconductor index (.SOX) advanced 1.8% to a nearly one-month high. Technology heavyweights Microsoft, Nvidia, and Apple also posted modest gains, lifting the S&P 500 information technology sector (.SPLRCT) by 0.9% and boosting the Nasdaq. Analysts highlighted that earnings growth is broadening beyond chipmakers to AI model builders. Among single stocks, Dell and HP gained following Lenovo's robust quarterly report, whereas Tapestry tumbled to the bottom of the S&P 500 following its earnings release.
