July 29, Fineko/abc.az. The U.S. Department of the Treasury has imposed new sanctions targeting Iran's efforts to generate revenue through the Strait of Hormuz and pressuring its energy transport network.
The sanctions target two Iranian firms — Persian Gulf Marine Insurance Company and HormuzSafe Marine Services Authority — accused of operating an extortion scheme backed by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) that forced commercial vessels transiting the strait to buy mandatory maritime insurance.
Additionally, Washington sanctioned 8 vessels carrying Iranian crude oil and petrochemical products, along with 8 entities based in China, Hong Kong, and the Marshall Islands that own or operate them. The blocked tankers fly the flags of the Marshall Islands, Mozambique, Barbados, and Vanuatu, with one vessel's flag listed as unknown.
