May 12, Fineko/abc.az. In 2025, 16.81 million tons of cargo were transported by rail in Azerbaijan (9.4% less than in 2024). The international cargo transportation decreased to 14.27 million tons, a drop of 7.7% year-on-year.
ABC.AZ informs with reference to the State Statistics Committee that import shipments totaled 4.72 million tons (9.6% less versus the previous year). Export deliveries declined to 2.85 million tons (-2.9%), while transit shipments totaled 6.69 million tons (-8.2%). Domestic supplies dropped even more, to 2.54 million tons, which means fall of 18.2% year-on-year.
Revenue from cargo transportation has also decreased. In 2025, 383.99 million manats were received from rail freight transportation (9.4% less in annual terms). Revenues from international transportation amounted to 333.91 million manats (a drop of 10%).
Revenues from transit traffic fell to 146.54 million manats (-15.2%). Revenues from import shipments reached 103.34 million manats (-7.4%), from exports - 84.03 million manats (-3%). Earnings from domestic transportation totaled 50.08 million manats (5.5% less than last year).
At the same time, growth was recorded in the passenger transportation segment. Last year, 10.27 million passengers were carried by rail (20.4% more year-on-year). Income from passenger transportation grew up to 16.68 million manats, showing an increase of 42.6%.
In addition, the number of employees in this sector has almost tripled to 10,440. Last year, 3,653 people worked in the industry.
