China's Domestic Auto Sales Plunge 24% in August as Automakers Shift Focus to Record Exports

September 8, Fineko/abc.az. According to data from the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA), retail vehicle sales in China dropped 24% year-on-year in August to 1.54 million units.

Driven by the ongoing real estate crisis and weakening consumer confidence, domestic sales have contracted by over 20% year-to-date. Aggressive local price wars aimed at defending market share have severely squeezed industry margins, pulling total sector profitability down to 3.6%.

To offset shrinking domestic demand, Chinese automakers have aggressively pivoted toward global expansion:

  • Export Surge: Passenger vehicle exports surged 78% year-on-year in August to a record 888,000 units, pushing foreign shipments to 38% of total deliveries.

  • Key Market Players: BYD retained its position as China's top new energy vehicle exporter with over 184,000 overseas units shipped, raising its annual export target to 2 million vehicles. Meanwhile, Tesla exported 36,000 out of the 86,000 electric vehicles produced at its Shanghai Gigafactory.
