August 20, Fineko/abc.az. According to figures released by the U.S. Treasury Department Al Jazeera, total U.S. national debt surpassed $40.047 trillion as of August 18.

Debt held by the public accounted for $32.266 trillion, while intragovernmental holdings reached $7.782 trillion.

The national debt crossed the $30 trillion threshold in early 2022. Remarkably, the debt burden expanded by $10 trillion in less than 5 years, driven by pandemic-era stimulus programs, reduced tax receipts, and surging interest servicing costs. At the start of this year, the total debt stood at $38.4 trillion.
