August 6, Fineko/abc.az. The Sangachal Terminal Electrification (STEL) project has progressed from the primary construction phase to the commissioning and testing stage, with the first connection to the national grid scheduled for Q3 2026.
The $230 million STEL project will integrate the terminal with the national grid managed by AzerEnerji JSC. It functions alongside the 240 MW "Shafag" Solar Power Plant in Jabrayil through a virtual power transfer mechanism. Together, these initiatives are projected to reduce operational emissions at the terminal by 50%.
Phase 1 of the project is expected to be completed by mid-2027, and Phase 2 by the end of 2028. Following electrification, seven gas turbines currently generating power at the terminal will be decommissioned, freeing up fuel gas for commercial export.
