August 5, Fineko/abc.az. Zoox, the autonomous vehicle subsidiary of Amazon, has announced the rollout of its commercial robotaxi service in Las Vegas starting next week, following approval from the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

Zoox is the first autonomous vehicle company to secure an exemption from U.S. federal safety standards that mandate human driver controls. However, the regulatory waiver limits the company’s deployment to a maximum of 2,500 vehicles per year over the next two years. Fares for the service will be priced similarly to the "Comfort" tier of traditional ride-hailing apps.

The move intensifies competition in the U.S. commercial autonomous ride-hailing market, where Alphabet's Waymo and Tesla are already expanding. Zoox has not yet shared a timeline for launching paid commercial operations in other U.S. cities.
