Supply Concerns Trigger Price Surge in Global Sugar Market

06:00 - 4.08.2026

August 4, Fineko/abc.az. Declining production expectations across India, the United States, and Europe have heightened global sugar supply concerns, driving prices to two-week highs.

Covrig Analytics projects a global sugar deficit of 300,000 metric tons for the 2026-2027 season. Meanwhile, research firm BMI expects the global market surplus to shrink significantly from 7 million tons in the previous season to 2.8 million tons.

Key Regional Developments:

  • India: Production output estimates were cut by 500,000 tons due to irregular monsoon rainfalls and reduced planted areas, raising the prospect of potential sugar imports.

  • European Union: Unseasonably hot and dry weather slashed EU sugar beet yield forecasts by 7% compared to last year.

  • United States: Yield projections for both sugar beet and sugarcane were revised downward.

Supply anxiety quickly spilled over to commodity markets. In London, active white sugar futures jumped 2.2% to $471.60 per metric ton, hitting their highest level since July 17. Raw sugar futures in New York also gained 1.8%.
