July 27, Fineko/abc.az. The European Commission projects a gradual reduction in the European Union's overall population alongside a rising share of elderly citizens.

According to the report, the EU population is expected to decline from 450.6 million people in 2026 to 398.8 million by the end of the century. Simultaneously, life expectancy is set to increase: the proportion of individuals aged 80 and older is projected to rise from the current 6% to 15% by 2100. Brussels notes that while these demographic shifts will pose significant challenges for the economy and labor markets, they will also unlock opportunities in healthcare, technological innovation, and the expanding longevity economy.
