July 23, Fineko/abc.az. NASA's Juno spacecraft has provided the first-ever measurements of the subsurface temperatures on Jupiter's volcanic moon, Io, revealing significant internal heating.
At a depth of just a few meters, scientists recorded a temperature increase of more than 22°C (40°F), indicating intense heat generated from within the moon. Researchers attribute this temperature gradient to a continuous heat flow from Io's interior and extensive lava fields hidden beneath a hardened crust. Additionally, the data indicates that much of Io's surface consists of porous, loose volcanic plains rather than dense rock.
The microwave radiometry method used by Juno allows scientists to "peer" beneath planetary crusts and could be applied to study volcanic activity on Earth and other celestial bodies.
