July 22, Fineko/abc.az. The EU countries are facing direct losses of €30-40 billion in the event of a ban on the use of China’s Huawei and ZTE equipment in telecommunications networks, Politico informs, referring to GSMA report.
According to the association, the main part of the costs is associated with the need to replace the already installed equipment if the suppliers are subject to restrictions. At the same time, GSMA's calculations significantly exceed European Commission's forecast, which previously estimated such costs at €10-13 bn in the first 3 years.
A number of experts consider GSMA's assessment to be overestimated. They point out that some equipment is subject to scheduled replacement due to wear and tear, so these costs cannot be fully attributed to the consequences of the ban. Considering this factor, the actual additional costs may be closer to European Commission's estimates.
