July 16, Fineko/abc.az. According to the June 2026 edition of the "Ericsson Mobility Report," 162 million new 5G subscriptions were added globally during the first quarter of the year, pushing the worldwide total past the milestone to 3.1 billion.
Ericsson projects this figure to more than double to 6.4 billion by the end of 2031, with 5G networks expected to carry 85% of all mobile data traffic by then, heavily driven by the rise of AI applications which are accelerating uplink traffic growth. Looking beyond the current generation, the report highlights that the standardization of 6G architecture is well underway, with first commercial launches expected around 2030 in front-runner markets, including the United States, China, Japan, South Korea, and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries.
