July 1, Fineko/abc.az. In Azerbaijan, alcoholic beverages, honey, caviar, and village chicken are the most frequently counterfeited goods.
ABC.AZ reports that Goshgar Tahmazli, the chairman of the Food Safety Agency of Azerbaijan, said this in an interview with Trend news agency and Xəzər TV.
According to Tahmazli, about 4 tons of fake honey were discovered.
"Alcoholic beverages are the most frequently counterfeited goods in the world. Such cases are not uncommon in Azerbaijan. At the same time, food fraud is quite common. Nowadays, we often encounter fake black caviar. There are two main types of fraud in this area.
In the first case, black caviar of various origins is packaged and sold as Azerbaijani sturgeon caviar, misleading consumers. This means that a product made in another country is being sold as a local product. The second type of fraud involves artificial caviar. Production and import of artificial caviar is not prohibited in the country. This is a food product that complies with the law. It should be sold under its own name, "artificial caviar". However, in some cases, especially in restaurants and banquets, consumers are deceived into believing that this product is genuine black caviar. Although it is not harmful to health, it is a serious violation of consumer rights. The agency is taking appropriate measures to address these issues," Tahmazli said.
