NASA conducts unprecedented campaign to observe comet 3I/ATLAS

November 20, Fineko/abc.az. "NASA is in the midst of an unprecedented campaign to observe the Solar System, directing its spacecraft and telescopes to track comet 3I/ATLAS," ABC.AZ reports, referring to agency's website at NASA.

It was that 12 spacecrafts have already received and processed images of the comet since its discovery, and several others will be involved as 3I/ATLAS passes through the Solar System.

Observing an interstellar object from so many locations allows to compare 3I/ATLAS with comets formed inside the Solar System and draw a conclusion about how the composition of other planetary systems may differ from ours, the publication says.

3I/ATLAS is the third interstellar celestial body discovered by astronomers during the entire observation period. The first of these was the asteroid Oumuamua, discovered in the fall of 2017, and the second was comet 2I/Borisov, discovered by Russian astronomer Gennady Borisov in August 2019.
