September 23, Fineko/abc.az. The construction of an international airport on the territory of the Alat free economic zone will be completed by the end of next year, and the opening will take place in the first quarter of 2027, ABC.AZ report, quoting the president and CEO of Silk Way West Airlines, Wolfgang Meier, during the first Azerbaijan International Investment Forum (AIIF 2025).

"We started the construction of the airport in Alat at the end of 2023. We’ll create an entire ecosystem of air cargo transportation and logistics in a free trade zone and a free economic zone. And this will be a huge boost for the economy, for transport accessibility, and for development of the logistics sector in this country. It will be a "green airport". Solar panels will be installed on the roofs, and maintenance equipment will run on electricity. This will be the airport of the future, a green cargo airport with a four-kilometer runway," the company's president added.

Meier informed about Silk Way's plans to develop intermodal routes along the Middle Corridor.

"Baku is our strategic hub. It is a place where East and West meet, where we connect people from all over the world. The so-called Middle Corridor, as I call it, has always been the "stepson" among the transport routes from East to West. Recently, this "stepson" has gained momentum. And we, as Silk Way, will develop not only air-to-air routes along this ancient Silk Road, which we are already doing, but also intermodal routes: connecting land routes with air routes, railway routes with air routes," he said.

Meier noted that they plan to do this through a new airport, which the Silkway Group is building for its own cargo transportation.

The cargo airport will occupy an area of more than 750 hectares. At the first stage, its capacity will be 500,000 tons of cargo a year, and in the future this figure is to increase up to 1.5 million tons.
