Mazda Prepares the Return of the Rotary Engine with the Iconic SP Concept

12:20 - 27.08.2025

August 27, Fineko/abc.az. Mazda is preparing to bring back the rotary engine into mass production with the Iconic SP concept, unveiled at the Japan Mobility Show 2023. After discontinuing the RX-8 in 2012, the company experimented with the rotary engine in the MX-30 crossover, where it was used as a generator. Now, Mazda is betting on a sports car that could become the successor to the MX-5.

According to ABC.AZ, the Iconic SP is equipped with a two-rotor engine producing 272 kW, operating as part of a hybrid system. The motor does not drive the wheels directly but instead charges the battery, ensuring eco-friendliness and the ability to use alternative fuels, including hydrogen. Mazda is actively working on adapting rotary engines to modern environmental standards. Representatives of Mazda Australia expressed readiness to support the launch of the production version of the Iconic SP, considering it more promising and more likely to succeed. The Iconic SP could become the flagship model in the MX-5 lineup, opening a new chapter in the history of Mazda’s rotary engines.
