Worldwide consumption of wine fell by 4.8% in 2024

April 16, Fineko/abc.az. Worldwide consumption of wine fell by 4.8% in 2024 to 225.8 million hectolitres.

ABC.AZ reports, quoting John Barker, the director general of the International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV).

According to the OIV, global wine production in 2024 slumped to 226 million hectoliters, the lowest level since 1961.

"This decrease is linked mainly with extreme environmental conditions such as heat and drought, as well as unpredictable weather events in the main wine regions of the northern and southern hemispheres. In addition, in some regions, this low production volume reflects changes in the market caused by a decrease in consumption. This has led to the lowest global wine production since 1961, when spring frosts devastated major vineyards in Europe," Barker said.
