December 23, Fineko/abc.az. The European Union plans to introduce the 16th package of sanctions against Russia by February 24, 2025, ABC.AZ reports, referring to newspaper Die Welt.
The new sanctions will target sectors of the Russian economy that have not previously been affected by sanctions or are insufficiently covered. The European Commission and the European External Action Service also plan to impose entry bans and asset freezes on individuals suspected of spying for Russia. Ten EU countries have called on the European Commission to consider a joint proposal and urgently work on a package of sanctions against Russia, as well as develop similar restrictions for Belarus, which is an ally of Moscow. Countries, mainly from Central Europe and Ireland, stressed the need to ban imports of Russian gas and LNG as soon as possible. If this proves impossible, a gradual reduction in Russian gas consumption is considered as an alternative.
The document recommends that targeted sanctions apply to the Russian LNG transportation fleet, including restrictions on access to ports and the use of other marine services.
