Presidential elections in U.S. become the most expensive in history

November 6, Fineko/abc.az. Democrat Kamala Harris and Republican Donald Trump have together spent $3.5 billion in their race for the White House.

ABC.AZ reports, referring to Financial Times, that this makes the 2024 presidential campaign the most expensive U.S. general election in history.

With the two candidates running neck and neck as voters headed to the polls on election day, final filings in mid-October show that the campaigns, outside groups and party committees have collectively raised almost $4.2 billion.

Harris outraised her Republican opponent, with groups including the Democratic National Committee and affiliated fundraising vehicles — among them Super Pacs, which can raise unlimited amounts from individuals — attracting more than $2.3 billion and spending $1.9 billion. Trump groups and the Republican National Committee took in just over $1.8 billion and spent $1.6 billion.

Operational and administrative expenses became the second item of expenditure for both candidates, amounting to just under $250 million for Harris and about $200 million for Trump.

The newspaper draws attention to the fact that during the Trump campaign, about 14% of all funds - over $ 100 million - went to cover the legal costs of the ex-president, against whom several lawsuits are being conducted in the U.S. In court in Washington, the Republicans, in particular, are actually accused of trying to illegally retain power, despite losing the elections in November 2020.
