Azerbaijan's rail sector: Fewer workers, higher wages in 2024

August 27, Fineko/abc.az. The number of railway workers in Azerbaijan has decreased by 15.3% by the end of the first half of 2024.

According to ABC.AZ, the state-owned Azerbaijan Railways, the sole operator of the country's rail network, employed 3,885 people as of July 1, 2024, compared to 4,586 in the same period last year.

Despite the workforce reduction, the average monthly salary in the sector has risen by 21.3% year-on-year, from 1,156.3 manats to 1,402.4 manats.

In terms of performance, Azerbaijan Railways has seen growth in both freight and passenger transportation. Freight volume increased by 1.8% year-on-year to 9.32 million tons, while passenger numbers grew by 14.82% to 3.85 million. Consequently, revenues from railway operations surged by 25% to 463.54 million manats.
