July 5, Fineko/abc.az. In 2023, Georgian railways transported 13.6 million tons of cargo (8.2% less than in 2022), ABC.AZ reports with reference to the financial statements of Georgian Railways.
Decrease in cargo turnover is mainly linked with a decline in transit traffic. If in 2022 the transit cargo reached 8.6 million tons, then in 2023 this figure fell to 7.7 million tons.
Over the reported term, 7.7 million tons or 47% of the goods transported by rail through Georgia were shipped from Russia.
Azerbaijan accounts for 26% of transit cargo. 3.4% of the cargo was shipped from Turkmenistan, 3.2% from Romania, 2.8% from Bulgaria, 2.3% from Türkiye, 1.3% from Belarus and 1.2% from China.
Copper ore and other mining raw materials accounted for 28.9% of the total volume of transported goods, coal, crude oil and natural gas - 28.5%, food and beverages - 12.7%.
