Scania tests a solar-powered truck

September 5, Fineko/abc.az. A unique hybrid truck with a semi-trailer covered with solar panels from Scania is being tested on public roads.

ABC.AZ reports, referring to the press service of Scania, that tests are carried out based on the results of a two-year research collaboration involving Scania, Uppsala University, Eksjo Maskin & Truck, Midsummer, Ernsts Express and Dalakraft.

The truck is used in a project to study the generated solar energy and reduce carbon dioxide emissions due to solar panels. Researchers have developed new, efficient and lightweight solar panels for trucks. They are also exploring the possibilities of trucks interacting with the power grid and developing new models of what would happen if several trucks like this were connected to the power grid.

The solar-powered truck was created as part of a research project funded by the Vinnov State Innovation Agency, with the aim of developing trucks with low impact on the climate due to solar energy.

The car is a plug-in hybrid with capacity of 560 hp. On an 18-meter semi-trailer, an area of 100 sq m is covered with thin, light and flexible solar panels with maximum efficiency of 13.2 kW (peak power). It is estimated that when operated in Sweden, they will generate 8,000 kWh a year.

The total capacity of the batteries is 300 kWh, of which 100 kWh on a truck and 200 kWh on a trailer.
