Economist: This measure to help cut prices for fruits from abroad

12:15 - 2.05.2023

May 2, Fineko/abc.az. From January 2024, tropical fruits imported in Azerbaijan will be exempt from a 15% customs duty. Cabinet Ministers’ relevant resolution will be valid until December 31, 2030. But will this affect the price of imported citrus fruits?

ABC.AZ reports that expert economist Eyub Kerimli said that as a result of this measure, fruit prices from abroad will decrease.

Reduction of customs duty by 15% will ensure the availability of products:

"The exemption of tropical fruits from 15% customs duty is a positive thing. This will lead to lower prices. In addition, it will create a basis for lowering the prices of other fruits as a result of this measure. It goes without saying that this will also affect the prices of local fruits."

According to the economist, fresh fruits from various countries are imported in Azerbaijan: "Among these products, along with citrus, tropical fruits, there are fruits grown in the climatic conditions of Azerbaijan. The import of citrus and tropical fruits is understandable, because the climatic conditions of our country do not allow us to grow these crops."
