February 15, Fineko/abc.az. The Sri Lankan government has imposed a full ban on the use of biodegradable disposable plastic products.
ABC.AZ reports that government’s official representative, Information Minister Banduly Gunawardany said that the ban is dictated by environmental protection, as well as measures to save elephants and wild deer living on the island, which are killed by plastic waste that gets into their food.
He added that the production and sale of plastic products will be banned in Sri Lanka from June. These measures will complement the ban on the use of plastic bags in the country in force since 2017, as well as the ban on the import of disposable plastic tableware and children's toys made of this material introduced in 2021.
